This is how you should sound in a salary negotiation

This is how you should sound in a salary negotiationThis is how you should sound in a salary negotiationWhen a recruiter first tells you the numbers behind the job offer, your immediate reaction can set the tone of the salary negotiation that will follow. You may feel nervous and excited, recognizing that your base salary could set the foundation for your financial future. You want to get it right and negotiate the best salary offer you can. With this pressure, asking for more money can be a stressful, nerve-wracking experience, but it does not have to be. Here is what you need to sound likeYou should sound matter-of-factTo get your tone right, you need to recognize that a salary negotiation for a new job is not a plea deal. You do not need to build up a long case for why you deserve more money, citing data, facts, and wants. This is a geschftliches miteinander deal, not personal attack. There may be personal stakes for you in this negotiation, but for the person on the other side, i t is business as usual. When Ask a Managers Alison Green roleplays a salary negotiation with a guest on her podcast, she sounds matter-of-fact when she simply asks, Any chance you can go up to X? There is no hesitation or pleading in her voice. As Green puts it, If you were hiring a handyman for your house, you would just be like, Hey, any chance you can get it done for X?Same tone here. Its business, youre business people, youre both looking for what you need, and this is just you expressing your side of that.Use silence to your advantageAnother way to sound more confident is to think about how the words are coming out of your mouth. Are you jumbling your questions together in the hopes you can get this over with or in your desire to get your point across? Slow down the tempo of the negotiation. When you sound calm and measured in your responses, you come across as more thoughtful and confident.Listen closely to the other person, pause for a while to show you are thinking about what they said, and keep your response slow and calm. This conveys respect but confidence in your position, psychotherapist Sally Hall recommends in negotiations like these. After you state your request for a higher number, keep quiet. Do not fill in the silence and backtrack your case with nervous babble. Sometimes, a long pause can be the moment needed for a hiring manager to process your request and realize that you are serious about your desired number. When you talk like a confident business person, you become one that can be respected by your negotiators. Do not underestimate the power of a confident, matter-of-fact tone when conveying requests.

Pearl Harbors Infamous Technologies

Pearl Harbors Infamous Technologies Pearl Harbors Infamous Technologies December 7, 1941. As President Franklin Roosevelt famously predicted, the passage of 74 years has not erased the infamy surrounding the date of Japans surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. But from an engineering standpoint, December 7 welches also a vivid snapshot of extraordinary new weapons of war. Some worked spectacularly well. Others fell spectacularly short. On that fateful morning, both sides unleashed new machines designed to control the element of surprise. Japans air and sea weapons were developed to slip through conventional defenses to wreak havoc at close sortiment. For the Allies, Pearl Harbor proved a baptism by fire for nascent early-warning and code-breaking technologies that would later turn the tide of the conflict. To preserve the crucial element of surprise, Japanese aircraft carriers set sail in November on a circuitous route chosen to avoid shipping lanes and evade U.S. planes patrolling the Pac ific. As the ships drew within range of Oahu, fighter planes and dive bombers took wing to strike onshore military airbases, docks, and the 92 U.S. ships anchored vulnerably in a 45-foot-deep harbor.Beyond its aerial bombing and strafing of ships and shore, Japan sent about 40 torpedo bombers into the harbor with a newly engineered torpedo designed to operate in Pearl Harbors shallow waters. Although conventional torpedoes of the time tended to run aground if fired in depths of less than 75 feet, Japans new finned weapons skidded past those limitations with explosive consequences.HA.19 (Midget submarine Type C) grounded in the surf on Oahu after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Image Wikimedia CommonsAnother shallow-harbor weapon deployed with mixed results at Pearl Harbor was the Type A Ko-huoteki midget submarine. Midget subs had many military uses but soon proved themselves to be effective harbor penetrators. Armed with torpedoes or mines attached to their sides or stored in their nos e cones, or equipped to deliver frogmen to the scene of the action, midget subs were also useful for striking at close range. The Type A sub used at Pearl Harbor was about 73 ft. long and just shy of 10 ft in height with a 600 hp electric maschine powered by 384 2-V power cells.Only two of the five midget subs deployed in the attack made it into the harbor. One went aground, was captured, and later toured around the U.S. as a trophy to help sell war bonds. Wreckage from other midgets recovered in the intervening decades from within and nearby the harbor suggest that these diminutive submersibles scored at least a few direct torpedo hits, including one strike on the USS West Virginia verified later.Early DetectionThe question of how U.S. military intelligence missed advance signs of an imminent attack has persisted for 74 years. Early warning technologies like radar and cryptography were in their infancy on December 7, but would rapidly evolve in the aftermath.Well before the infamou s date of the attack, opportunities to thwart it were missed due to a lack of code-breaking know-how. The U.S. effort to train experts in cryptography and cryptanalysis was under-funded and under-resourced. Despite the chatter of coded messages during Japans build-up and staging of the attack, the U.S. had no suitable technology to detect and interpret the veiled clues of impending disaster.SCR-270, a radar similar to the model that detected the attacking Pearl Harbor planes. Image Wikimedia CommonsAlthough British radar systems had been invaluable in coping with Germanys aerial strikes earlier in the conflict, radar coverage in Americas Pacific islands was still a work in progress. According to the book Pearl Harbor Final Judgement, Pearl Harbor lacked a permanent radar station at the time of the attack. However, leaders believed the five mobile radar units sited around the area were adequate to provide early warning of an attack. Radar advocates cautioned that work was still neede d to ensure airborne pilots more than five miles off shore had robust communications with their officers on the ground. Additionally, even if the technology was fully up to par, it would require the coordination of both Army and Navy personnel to distinguish friendly aircraft from enemy invaders. Thus, the book states, the Japanese planes that were effectively spotted 100 miles off shore were confused with a flight of U.S. B-17 bombers scheduled to arrive around the same time and allowed to proceed. One of the more legendary engineering impacts of Pearl Harbor was the creation of the U.S. Navy Seabees. The Naval Construction Battalions that morphed into the Seabees were formed in December 1941 under the watch of Rear Admiral Ben Moreell. Only after the attack did high command green-light the Seabees program. Members were recruited from civilian construction and engineering trades and chosen for their technical skill, more so than their physical prowess. In the all-or-nothing conflict of World War II, the Seabees gave many technically savvy middle-aged men a chance to serve in the war effort.More than 2,300 people were killed in the Pearl Harbor attack. On December 8 and the dark days that followed, it appeared to have been a devastating victory for Japan. Within four years, however, the technological tables turned dramatically with the Allies atomic annihilation of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. As the catalyst for Americas entry into World War II, the lethally effective operation also is the story of warfares catalytic impact on technology.Michael MacRae is an independent writer. Type delete type What writers do (or Why Im editing my life)

Type delete type What writers do (or Why Im editing my life)Type delete type What writers do (or Why Im editing my life)Im currently working on a book project, which explains why I found myself binge-watching videos on Instagram the other day.In my senseless searching, I stumbled across a video of an author speaking to a group of writers, where she admits, to her own chagrin, that she just spent the day editing her introduction for the tenth time instead of writing. She said, I spent three hours moving words around on a page, thinking I welches writing. But I wasnt writing. I wasnt adding a word to my word count. I was hiding. The audience applauded. This both inspired and troubled me. It inspired me because I had literally just done this that day editing and re-editing the introduction to a new book Im writing with a friend. And I wondered now if I had just wasted my time. And it troubled me because it seems shortsighted. Part of writing is not writing. Of course, you cant complete a bo ok if you never get past a few hundred words on a page. But at the same time, so much of writing is not just creation. Its curation. All good writing is rewriting, they say.Type. Delete. Type. This is what we writers do. And it cannot be ignored, avoided, or accelerated. You put the words on the page, rearrange them, remove some of them, add mora words, and at some point get something that looks complete. Its never really finished, of course. Thats the beauty and tragedy of it all. You can always tinker and play with it, and many do just that.F. Scott Fitzgerald always carried around a copy ofThe Great Gatsbywith him wherever he went, because he was never fully satisfied with it, making constant notes and corrections to it until the end of his life.Fitzgerald was continually chasing the ideal of his art and never finding it. Maybe, in a way, we all are.So lets talk about that.In plus-rechnen to this blog post, I also recorded a podcast to expand on the idea of what writers really do. You can listen to it here. Why Grady Tripp couldnt stop writing (or when writing isnt writing)Recently, I watched a movie about writers calledWonder Boys. In it, the main character Grady Tripps first novel was a big hit, and now he is struggling to finish his next book. Years past deadline, he is constantly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and everyone thinks hes blocked.Turns out, Grady is not blocked at all. Hes written well over 2,000 pages, pages about horse genealogies and dental records and who knows what else. When a student calls him out for not making any choices, he gets defensive. But then (spoiler alert) in an interesting turn of events, he loses the manuscript. It flies out the window and goes straight into the river. Afterward, someone asks what the book was about, and Grady says, I dont know.If you dont know what the story was about, then why were you writing it?Because, he admits, I couldnt stop.Writing is not just about meeting a word count. It is about sayin g something. Just because youre typing doesnt mean youre communicating. And just because youre deleting doesnt mean you arent making progress. Why everything must die before it can be rebornWhen you feel stuck, the worst thing you can do is stop. The second worst thing you can do is keep going in the wrong direction. This is true in writing, and this is true in life. Editing is as much a part of the writing process as composition.Making something is not just about adding a new piece to the larger whole. Sometimes, its about taking something away. And were not just talking about writing anymore, are we?Lately, Ive been reconsidering some of my most deeply-held beliefs. As one friend put it, Im taking some dusty ideas off the shelf, re-examining them, and deciding if I want to put them back on the shelf. For a while, I felt bad about this until a psychotherapist/priest friend of mine explained that all healthy spiritual and emotional journeys follow a simple process of deconstruction an d reconstruction. Heres he describes itThesisFirst you believe something.AntithesisThen you believe the opposite of that something.SynthesisThen you find a way to reconcile the something with its seeming contradiction.(Side note Rob Bell has a pretty interesting podcast on this concepthere.)It is in a paradox that truth is found and often deepened. We sometimes have to destroy what weve built to create something better.Everything is always ending, and everything is always beginning. That was made clear to me the other weekend when I had a friend die, another friend announced he was getting divorced, and another friend decided to leave his job and strike out on his own. All in a weekend.Endings and beginnings. Thats life. And thats writing. The trick, it seems, is not to keep doing what youre doing. Its to edit. To ask why youre doing it in the first place. Im currently doing this with my life and my business, and my writing- and its scary as hell. But it also feels right. Because I kn ow some things cant be born until other things die.Creation is always an act of resurrection.Hows the writing going? So when someone asks you, Hows the writing going? and youve deleted more words than youve typed today, dont feel bad.Sometimes, finishing is overrated (dont tell my friend Jon I said that). When you find yourself working on that book and the word count doesnt measure up to the goal, understand you are probably more on track than you realize. You are doing the work. Type. Delete. Type. Remember?Dont just measure what youve done but also what youre doing. They both matter. The secret to doing good work is not just about crossing finish lines. Its about running good races. Some races we finish, and some we only begin. But most of us got into this work not to amass a bunch of medals but for the joy of the run. Almost every great writer dies with an incomplete manuscript, and maybe this is as it should be. They died doing what they loved - not finishing, but creating.Plus, y ou never know what might happen to those abandoned and incomplete works. I always loved that Tolkien story Leaf By Niggle in which an artist spends his entire life working on a single painting of a tree and never finishes it.Then in the afterlife, he discovers not only the tree but a whole forest and a garden for him to tend. What he began in one life, he was able to complete in another. And what he could only imagine in one life became a reality in another.Maybe thats how it works. We chase the ideal, and all our vain efforts to make something measure up are just that - vain. Vain but beautiful and even more important worthwhile. What better way to spend a life than in pursuit of the true, the good, and the beautiful? Thats how Im trying to spend mine, anyway.Oh, and those Fitzgerald edits I mentioned, the mere tinkerings of an obsessive perfectionist? Well, after the authors death, that old, marked-up copy ofGatsbywas discovered. And the edits he made ended up in future versions o f the book. So you just never know what comes from a work you start but never quite finish.Thisarticlefirst appeared onGoins, Writer.

Create the Perfect Home Office in Five Easy Steps

Create the Perfect Home Office in Five Easy StepsCreate the Perfect Home Office in Five Easy Steps A healthy work-life balance is a laudable goal that most people aspire to. In fact, a flexible schedule has become one of the most sought-after elements of a job.Part of this flexibility includes the ability to work from home - something 76 percent of women say is necessary for companies to retain long-term staff. There are many reasons women want to work at home - increased flexibility within their current position,to take care of children and save on daycare expenses or evento be their own boss or start their own online company. No matter the reason you want to get away from the cubicle world, its absolutely essential to create a designated work space that, well, works . Here are five factors to consider when creating your own at-home arbeitszimmer. The beauty of working from home is that you get to create your own work space and a routine that are suited to your need s, style and schedule. No more uncomfortable chairs or required clock-in times. But before you begin revamping your home schreibstube, ask yourself this question What type of environment works best for me?You know yourself better than anyone else, so it only makes sense to design an office space that meets your needs. When decorating, determine if youd like to use a standing desk or work from the kitchen table. Do you want your desk to face the windows open views or would you rather face the wall and avoid outside distractions? Consider whether you work better while listening to music or if new age noise is a better fit. What components of the environment increase your productivity and energy? Design your space according to those needs.Although working from home has many perks , its easy to get sidetracked. You see a pile of unfolded laundry out of the corner of your eye, want to get in a quick workout, or feel the pull of important family errands. However, its wise to treat your at-home office time as you would a set schedule in a brick-and-mortar space. During working hours, you are unavailable for anything outside of your job duties. Create an action plan to deal with distractions and stay organized when working from home.Additionally, consider establishing cues for your roommate, spouse or other family members. Maybe a closed door means do not disturb, or certain hours are quiet hours in the home. Whatever your plan is, communicate it to others to minimize distractions. Most corporate offices dont allow you to decorate your space. You might get to have a family picture at your desk, but not much else.At home, though, you are at liberty to decorate your office any way you like. One great place to start is by painting the walls. Color is an easy and effective way to boost your mood and productivity. Colors can impact the way you think, behave, and perform , and the right color could have subtle effects on the overall success of your work. You may also cons ider bringing in greenery, artwork, and unique furniture to your space. Consider purchasing a treadmill desk or yoga ball chair. If the space makes you feel good, then youll want to spend time there. And the more time you spend in your office, the more likely youll be to get more work done. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the latest craze in technology. Putting it simply, its the act of connecting everyday items to the internet, and employees are increasingly connected to everything on their smartphone, tablet and computer.Use smart technology in your new office by installing smart lights and a smart thermostat. If you connect these features to your smartphone, you can change the hue and brightness of your lights and temperature of the room while seated at your desk. Now you dont have to freeze at your desk because the office air conditioning is blasting . Instead, you can control the space and adjust it to meet your exact needs and even the particular project or kind of work youre e ngaged in at the moment. In a traditional office space, youre surrounded by people all day. But when you work from home, you may be isolated much of the time. Make sure to safeguard your space and take proper precautions. Here are a few security tips to consider when working from homeThis article was originally published on DailyWorth . It is reprinted with permission.

How Racehorse Trainers Make Money

How Racehorse Trainers Make MoneyHow Racehorse Trainers Make MoneyThere is really no definitive answer to the question of how much money an average racehorse coachearns, as their income can be influenced by both the success of their runners on the track and their other geschftsleben endeavors. Most racehorse trainers actually rely on several different streams of revenue to make a living. Here are some key ways that racehorse trainers can make money. Purse Percentages Trainers traditionally receive a cut of the earnings awarded to horses that finish first, second, or third in races. This money is transferred directly to them from the tracks purse account. Purse earnings can be a huge percentage of a trainers income, and a trainer can really make the big bucks if their horses compete well in the more prestigious stakes races (which carry purses ranging from a few hundred thousand to several million dollars). Day Rate for Horse Trainers Trainers charge a per diem for each horse that is kept in their stable. This rate includes basics like bedding for the stall, feed, use of stable equipment and tack, exercise rider, groom, and other small incidentals. Owners are still billed for care from a veterinarian or farrier, medications, jockey fees, and a number of other expenses not included in the day rate. Private trainers (who only train for a sole owner) may be compensated on a set salary. Acting as Bloodstock werber Trainers often represent their clients at sales, evaluating prospects and bidding in the sales pavilion. They may also scout prospects that they see at the racetrack. In either scenario (where the trainer brokers the transaction as an agent) they receive a commission on the sale price. This fee is usually 5 percent of the purchase price. Breeding Rights It is common for the owners of good (stakes-winning) colts to give the trainer a lifetime breeding right. This is basically a free breeding each year for the mare of their choice, and this rig ht can be resold during years where the trainer does not have a mare of their own to breed. Breeding rights to major stakes winners can be quite valuable, as some stallions command fees of well over $100,000 per breeding. Operating a Racehorse Rehabilitation Facility Injured racehorses may need to be on stall rest for months after a significant mishap, and bringing them back to racing fitness can be a long and tedious process. They must be removed from the trainers track stalls and shipped elsewhere during this time. While there are commercial businesses offering rehab services, many trainers own layup facilities of their own where they can supervise care during the recovery process. Rehab care can be pricey, and injuries are inevitable in this business, so this is another good niche area of the business to operate in. Operating a Horse Training Center Some trainers operate training centers where they can begin the training of young prospects, breaking them to saddle and rid er so that they can ultimately start working on the training track. Some trainers work almost exclusively in this specialty area, and the money can be quite good once a trainer has built up a reputation in the business. Trainers also claim horses to run themselves or on behalf of a client. (In claiming races each horse is available for sale at a specified price to any interested buyer who registers their interest with the racing office prior to the race. In the case of multiple claims, a number is drawn to determine the winning bidder). If they run the horse for a client they usually dont receive a commission, but they do get the added revenue from the horses earnings and day rate. Trainers Running Their Own Horses Many trainers run a few horses of their own, and they get to keep all of the earnings in this case (save for the jockey fees of course). There are examples of the owner/trainer combination to be found in nearly every racing program, particularly in lower level races w here it is extremely common.

3D Printing for Hollywood and Beyond at ASMEs AM3D Jason Lopes Legacy

3D Printing for Hollywood and Beyond at ASMEs AM3D Jason Lopes Legacy 3D Printing for Hollywood and Beyond at ASMEs AM3D Jason Lopes Legacy The Future of Hollywood Will Be 3D-PrintedJason Lopes commands the attention of every room he walks into these days.Hes been called influential, engaging and the most interesting speaker on 3D printing todayand with 3D-printing work of his featured in Hollywood films such as Iron Man, Jurassic World, and Pacific Rim, the praise is well-deserved.Lopes is the lead systems engineer at Legacy Effects, a studio that uses additive technology, along with the talents of many artists and designers, to create stunning visuals for Hollywood and beyond.Lopes has been making the rounds at 3D-printing conferences, and in August delivered a keynotlagee address at ASMEs AM3D conference where he spoke about how the expanding functionality of additive manufacturing (AM) is disrupting industries like his.Despite his popularity on the 3D circuit, Lopes is the fir st to admit his artistic work and traininghe studied film at The Art Institute of Philadelphiahave made him a bit of an oddball at AM events. When I started showing up to these events, people were just saying, Oh, thats just an artistic side, and basically not taking it as serious as it wasOh, its just Hollywood. But the amount of engineering that goes into all of our creations is absolutely phenomenal, and I can attest to our workflow that its not an easy thing to do what we do, Lopes says.Balancing art and technologyAlong with his film work, Lopess 3D printing has also appeared in video-game trailers for Call of Duty, Destiny, and Halo, as well as high-end commercials for Old Spice, GEICO, Direct TV, and more. The breadth of Lopess work3D scanning, 3D printing, figuring out how to get ideas off of the page and into realitymeans hes had to become an expert in marrying the technology of 3D printing and the skills it takes to do special effects design.Balancing art, technology, and eng ineering requires patience and hard work, especially when it comes to Legacy Effects signature armored suit, versions of which have been binnenseen in RoboCop and Iron Man.Jason Lopes, Lead Systems Engineer at Legacy Effects, talks to Honeycomb about his job and professional experiences.Video Reel Focus FilmsPlay video Just making a suit to fit over the person thats going to be inside of it, from a conceptual standpoint, is probably one of the hardest things out there to do, because right out the gate, youre not in control of the person that theyre choosing to put inside of this artwork. If it doesnt fit the back-and-forth that needs to happen so the art isnt sacrificed is just on a whole other level, Lopes says.Creating a high-tech hero suitTheres more than what meets the eye when it comes to creating a superhero suit like the one worn by, say, Robert Downey Jr.sTony Starknamely because theres more than one suit.Dont forget, when we do a movie, especially an action movie or a super hero movie, you have a hero suit, and then you have stunt versions. So we need to break out of that master asset and be able to come up with each specific suit for the requirement, and the shot, Lopes says.Although Lopes and his crew try to directly manufacture pieces and skip the mold-making as often as possible to save money and time, the team typically uses 3D printing for rapid prototyping. They then add the details to create a master pattern that will eventually be cast in other materials, each with different thicknesses, flexibility, and other properties. Some suits call for lights and other electronics, requiring the designers to incorporate batteries, processor boards, and wiring harnesses into the artworkand all of this has to happen while remaining identical in appearance.Real world applications in 3DLegacy Effects 3D expertise is not only coveted by filmmakers and producers, but has become a hot-ticket item in government and industry projects that have nothing to do with e ntertainment.Jason Lopes and the Legacy Effects team created the rigid parts of this gigantic, furry walking monster for the San Diego Comic-Con 2014- using almost 4,000 hours of 3D printing time on several Stratasys printers. Image Jason Lopes. For example, a government department got in touch with Lopes and crew to collaborate on the ongoing development of its tactical assault light operator suit (TALOS), a high-tech armored, robotic suit expected to be unveiled by 2018.At the same time, the team has formed mutually beneficial relationships with those working in other fields such as aerospace, sports, medicine, and materials research.Everyone wants to have a pretty shell on top of their nice engineering to be more visually appealing, but they understand that its more than just a design skill. They see what were able to do in our time frames, and they love learning from us, Lopes says.It allows people to see things outside the box. What lies aheadThe future of 3D printing in any fiel d is debatable, and Lopes definitely has some opinions on whether materials will surpass hardware in terms of importance.Ive been saying since Day One, for me, I think its all materials, Lopes says. Every day you hear more and more about materials that are coming out, and whats on the horizon, and I think that just opens up more opportunities.Dont get me wrongI respect the hardware, and I think the hardware is going to advance as well, but lets face it Whats going to drive future innovation ismaterials-based, as far as Im concerned.Lopes is excited about the the newer nylons and rubber-like materials currently being used in 3D printing. But what he, and many others, would really like to see are stronger materials, particularly those that can withstand higher temperatures for right-off-the-printer usage. When we can take someones vision and directly output thatput it in their hands and call it a daythats what will be the big game-changer for us, he says. The new frontier of additi ve manufacturing can be intimidating to navigate fortunately, theres the ASME AM3D conference to help guide you as you integrate AM into your business. Yes, you can reset your body without doing a cleanse

Yes, you can reset your body without doing a cleanseYes, you can reset your body without doing a cleanseIts entirely normal to get off track from time to time. And everyone does because - surprise - no one is perfect. The challenge, though, comes when you want to preset that proverbial reset button because we often go overboard, forcing ourselves into full-on cleanses that our bodies ultimately reject. So instead of traveling down this uncomfortable (and, often times, unsuccessful) path, consider the simple daily rituals below. Implement them for a brief period of time just to get yourself back on track, but then, if you find that theyre really working for you, add them to your typical routine for consistent energy and a happy digestive ordnungsprinzip.1.
